Thildie Peacock

SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST

Hello! My name is Thildie Peacock.

With over 20 years’ experience working as a children’s speech and language therapist, I am skilled in the assessment and treatment of communication difficulties in children aged between 1 – 12 years old.

I offer both assessment and therapy sessions from my clinic in Thame on the Oxfordshire Buckinghamshire border.

My aims in therapy are to help each child reach their full potential quickly, and with as much fun as possible! Children learn best whilst happy and engaged. I endeavour to tailor all therapy to each child’s individual strengths, weaknesses and interests.

The impact of communication difficulties

Communication difficulties can have a devastating impact on a child and their family. For the child themselves it can affect their overall development and quality of life with

  • increased frustration
  • reduced their confidence
  • restrict their ability to learn at school
  • restrict their ability to socialise with their family and friends
  • negatively affect their emotional wellbeing

It can also be frustrating for parents if they cannot communicate quickly and effectively with their child. There may be issues with the child being perceived by other people as being younger, less able, or badly behaved, instead of recognising the communication difficulty.

The good news is that we can always improve things! There are a lot of ways that we can support your child’s development and their ability to communicate with others.

Services

I offer assessment and treatment for a wide range of communication difficulties in children in the following areas:

• Speech sound delays and disorders. This includes unclear speech and conditions such as Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia

• Delayed or disordered Language Development. This includes

  • late talkers,
  • children with difficulties in understanding
  • children who struggle to talk in sentences, use grammar or remember words

• Listening and Attention Difficulties, including children with ADHD who also have communication difficulties

• Children with diagnosed or suspected Autism who are also struggling with communication.

• Stammering (in children up to around 6 years old)

• Other communication difficulties, like nasal sounds, hoarse voice, etc.

All therapy is tailored to each child’s individual strengths, weaknesses and interests.  The aim is to help your child reach their full potential quickly, while having fun too!

I encourage parents and educational settings to be involved in therapy, where appropriate, to maximise the child’s progress.  I also have close links with local NHS Speech and Language Therapy Departments so that services offered are in the best interest of the individual child and their family.

How to get started.....

You do not need to be referred for speech and language therapy by a teacher, health visitor or doctor and you are welcome to contact me directly. We usually start off with a phone conversation so that I can find out more about your concerns and your hopes for therapy and answer any questions that you may have. I will then send you the paperwork via email to complete before we can book the first appointment for your child.

It is usually necessary to complete a thorough assessment of your child’s communication skills before we start with therapy. This will help us to work out what your child’s strengths are, and where exactly their development is behind for their age. It will also help us to understand how to help them best. After the assessment I will be able to advise you on the therapy recommendations and you will also receive a report to explain the results in more detail.

If your child has recently been assessed by another speech and language therapist, please contact me to discuss this. If your child is also being seen by the NHS speech therapy team or are on their waiting list, it is important to mention this in our first conversation. Having independent therapy will not affect your child’s ability to have access to therapy available on the NHS.
